Week 3

What a Week 3. And with all that happened in week 3 let’s start off with the most controversial event of the week: Did this seriously deserve a flag?

I mean how is that flag. Let’s look at what Jamaal said:

I’ve been doing that (dance) forever,” Williams said. “They didn’t give me no explanation. They probably was just jealous of my hip movements. But I’ve never got a flag for that ever, now I got to fugure out what I got to do.”

The good thing is that this incident didn’t seem to deter him from his Shakira esque moves:

Will Williams now rethink his touchdown celebration?

Hell nah,” he said. “I’m going to do it, I’m just going to hit one (hip thrust). Hit one and go to something else real quick.

But I guess the real question is who did it better: Jamaal Williams or Hingle McCringleberry?!?!?

And since we are on the topic of the Lions can I complain for a second? Last week I waxed on about this Amon-Ra St. Brown guy after he destroyed me and so what did I do in Week 3? I started Jared Goff because I was like “if you can’t beat them join them”. What does St. Brown do? He breaks every single streak he had going (8 catch game, TD, target share above 24%) and gets hurt. Thanks dude.

Going to throw random stats in throughout the column, but here are some more that really stuck out to me:

Thought this was really interesting to take a look at strength of scheduling remaining.

And as Overbay called out in Fantasy it was a rather low scoring week. Week 3 2022 averaged 80.7 points. But what is interesting is that this wasn’t even close to the lowest scoring week in league history (I will go ahead and say I am behind on tracking scores from Week 12 of last year so I need to catch up between that point and Week 2 of 2022, but I am pretty sure that there wasn’t a lower scoring week in this time period).

In Week 3 of 2003 (wow!) the average points scored was 72.8. I mean check out these scorelines that week:

  • The Commish defeated (powered by Ricky Williams and Jerry Rice) Purity Panthers (Jeff Blythe) 78 – 66

  • Hilarity Ensues (Turner) defeated Indecorous Iquanas (VZ) 89-76

  • Matador Bullfighers (I am pretty sure this was Umphlett) defeated Backwoodcrazycajuns (Brandon) 73-61

  • Pax River Boys (Jeff) defeated K Rab Statesvillains (KRABS) 85-73

  • Outtatheblue (Overbay) defated No Sophomore Slump (Brent W) 67-60

So that is truly a low scoring week. Also for those keeping track at home The Commish won the Championship in 2003. So the macro point is that scoring was down in Week 3 and that seems to be a trend so far in the 2022 NFL season:

And finally. what is KRABS doing?!?!?! He STILL has Jeff Wilson Jr. on his roster. At this point the only logical conclusion is that he is trying to lose.

Live Look in at KRABS on Sunday

P.S. Yikes. So much for that WR strategy

Before we get to the awards lets check this week’s episode of Gridiron Heights (ugh):

Manager of the Weak

Well how quickly things turn? Maybe this isn’t the way? After a red hot 2-0 start Aaron and his Mandalorian crew have come crashing back to earth. And wait what is this? JaMarr Chase only had 6 points? Against the Jets? Ouch. At least I can finally say I agree with him on something.

Move of the Week So I was looking trying to find to find a move and honestly, I can’t find a good one. But I can find a TON of bad ones.

  • I played Jared Goff (13 points) over Trevor Lawrence (28 points)

  • I played Breshad Perriman (2 points) over Josh Palmer (9 points)

  • Cozart played Brandin Cooks (2 points) over DeVonta Smith (22 Points)

  • Cozart played a defense that got him -4 points (woof)

  • KRABS still has Jeff Wilson Jr. on his roster

  • KRABS thought playing Justin Fields (3 points) was a good idea

  • Billy started Dionte Johnson (8 points) over Amari Cooper (16 points)

  • Billy started Austin Ekeler (4 points) and or Javante Williams (5 points) over James Robinson (17 points)and Devin Singletary (14 points)

  • Overbay started David Montgomery (1 point) over Cordarrelle Patterson (21 points)

  • Note: VZ didn’t really have any bad moves because his entire team stinks.

So I guess I can see why we didn’t score any points in Week 3.

Note: I think it’s interesting that we only average 6.9 points at defense too. It wasn’t like there was a bonanza in Fantasy scoring. Jeff had the high defense score for the week with Philadelphia getting 18 points. Denver got 16 points, Cincinnati got 16 points and Carolina got 16 points, but I would have expected to have multiple teams with huge weeks. There were only two defensive touchdowns (Carolina and like the last meaningless play in the TNF game by Cleveland). Week 3 was just of ton of punts (including a butt punt).

MVP Saquon Barkley, Lamar Jackson, Ezekiel Elliott, AJ Brown, Jalen Hurts

When Saquon took off streaking through the Cowboys defense I thought he had this bad boy wrapped up, but Zeke was hungry. You all know that I have a soft spot in my heart for Zeke and he stepped up big time to keep Brent’s 2022 record undefeated when he broke the plane of the endzone with 27 seconds left in the 3rd quarter to tie the game at 13 for the Cowboys. But more importantly it nudged Brent ahead of the Kayak Pirates for a thrilling come from behind Week 3 victory. The Hype Train continues to pick up steam. Congrats to Zeke for winning the Week 3 MVP!

Manager of the Week

When is 70 points awesome? When your opponent scores 64 points. And with two consecutive victories Overbay finds himself with some momentum heading into rivalry week. Now yes David Montgomery may be injured (or lose his job) and Joe Mixon has been oddly unproductive and he has scored a grand total of 6 points all year from the TE position, but does any of that matter if you have Tyreek Hill and Jalen Hurts? Both of these guys have been amazing all year and with the way the Miami Dolphins offense is playing (at least everyone except Chase Edmonds) you have to think Tyreek Hill was one of the most underrated players in the entire draft.

And Jalen Hurts, what can you say about him? This guy was Matthew Berry’s “Ride or Die” this year and well he has been unstoppable. He has two consecutive 30+ point games after scoring 23 in Week 1. But what is even more impressive is he has a 68% completion percentage so far YTD and is 5th in QBR at 74.7. His completion % was 61% last year and 52 his rookie year. His QBR was 54.6 last year and 33.8 his rookie year. I think that is improvement so I only have two words: “WATCH OUT”.

Congrats to Overbay to winning the Week 4 Manager of the Week!

Until Week 4 (RIVALRY WEEK)…

-The Commish
